Passport: Airports could soon be PASSPORT-FREE with new biometric technology

There is nothing worse for a traveller to get to an airport only to realise that they have forgotten their passport.

Yet this could no longer be a problem for anyone heading on holiday in the future.

Dubai Airport is trialling a new way to travel which could eradicate the need to take a passport when travelling.

Whilst not yet available in the UK, it could be the new way to travel in the next decade.

Dubai has partnered with ObjectTech, a UK startup which is working to create ‘digital passports’.

The system will work by travellers being identified by a 3D scan as they walk through a short tunnel to baggage claim.

The facial recognition software will work alongside the digital passport to confirm it is the person travelling.

It uses LIDAR technology which is also used by Google’s driverless cars.

Paul Ferris, co-founder and CEO of ObjectTech, spoke out about the aims of the programme: “Not only will it make international travel quicker and safer, but it also gives people back control of their personal digital data.”

The control is given by the blockchain technology ObjectTech uses which allows people to choose who can see the information and what additional information they want to give.

Dubai is aiming to be one of the world leaders in the Internet of Things by 2020, becoming more advanced than other countries.

With this new system, it certainly marks an exciting time for the way holidaymakers travel.
