SPECULATION that troubled Australian player James O’Connor’s rugby career at Toulon is finished has been heightened after the club left him out of the team to play this weekend.

It was the second match the 26-year-old has missed since being arrested and placed in custody two weeks ago after being caught in a cocaine bust by undercover police outside a chic Parisian nightclub.

The former Wallaby, who plays for French club Toulon in the Top 14 league, was initially suspended by the club for a week, but no updates have been given about his future.

He and the mate he was arrested with, All Black Ali Williams, who plays for French side Racing 92, will be hauled before the French NRL disciplinary committee on March 29, according to league president Paul Goze.

O’Connor was fined for using cocaine and Williams, 35, was charged with purchasing 2.4 grams of the drug, and will appear in court at a later date.

Toulon club owner and president Mourad Boudjallel, who was originally expected to reveal what future, if any, O’Connor had with the club on Tuesday, has dodged questions all week about his plans for the fullback, who was temporarily suspended last week while the club decided his fate.

Rumours have been circulating that O’Connor, whose contract with Toulon ends in July, would either be asked to move on, or accept a greatly reduced pay packet.

Super rugby clubs in England are thought to have expressed some interest in O’Connor.

He is understood to have wanted to return to Australia but his latest indiscretion, following off-field incidents in Australia which saw his Wallabies contract torn up, will likely have put off any potential suitors.

Another Australian player who has previously been disciplined for using cocaine in Australia, Ben Barba, has been named in the squad for Toulon’s home game against Bayonne.
