Northern Ontario's McCarville beats defending champ Carey at Scotties

Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville beat the defending champions at the Canadian women’s curling championship Thursday to stay in the hunt for playoffs.

McCarville downed the Chelsey Carey team from Calgary 8-4 as Northern Ontario improved to 6-3 with two games remaining in the round robin.

Carey, 7-2, was still in playoff territory also with two games to play.

The top four teams after the final draw Friday morning get into the Page playoff.

Ontario’s Rachel Homan (10-0) and Manitoba’s Michelle Englot (9-1) had already locked down two spots with Homan assured of a top-two finish.


Ontario and Manitoba squared off Thursday evening in the round-robin finale for both teams.

Quebec’s Eve Belisle was still in contention at 6-4 with one to go.

Kerry Galusha of Northest Territories edged Alberta’s Shannon Kleibrink 4-3 putting both teams at 5-5.

Heather Nedohin has skipped the Albertans since Tuesday because of Kleibrink’s bad back.

In other games, Stacie Curtis of Newfoundland and Labrador downed Prince Edward Island’s Robyn MacPhee 10-4. Curtis was 4-6 and MacPhee fell to 2-8.

Saskatchewan defeated Nova Scotia’s Mary Mattatall 10-4 for Penny Barker’s first win of the tournament. Mattatall dropped to 2-7.
