THIS was not the fairytale ending Adelaide Thunderbirds superstar Renae Ingles had hoped for.
The world and Commonwealth Games champion’s elite-level career is over after the Thunderbirds lost to Collingwood Magpies at Adelaide Arena in the final Super Netball minor round on Sunday.
While there was no victory, the Thunderbirds’ performance typified the fight, passion and character of Ingles.
Struggling to hold back the tears, Ingles said she still felt like a winner despite the loss.
“My fairytale has been being able to come back and play netball after having the twins, play in the pink dress with a great bunch of girls,” Ingles said.
“I’m shattered, I love the game and I’ll miss so much about it. I’m still in denial a little.
“But I look over and see (husband) Joe and the kids (Jacob and Milla) and it is all worth it.”
Ingles, a premiership player with the Thunderbirds and a former captain, returned to the club this season after the birth of the twins last year.
However, she has opted to retire and travel with Joe to the US in July when he resumes his basketball career. Joe is on the verge of signing a lucrative NBA deal and Renae wants the family to be together.
