Next Rangers manager: Light Blues step up search and begin interviewing candidates

Mark Warburton left the club on Friday 10 February and is still in talks with the LMA over his compensation package.

Warburton left with assistant David Weir and chief scout Frank McParland after just over a season and a half at the club.

And it is understood Ibrox chiefs have started interviewing candidates for the manager and director of football roles.

Alex McLeish is the current favourite and has previously admitted he would be interested in a role at the club.

“When you get asked to come to a club like Rangers then its for sure a decision to turn that down,” he said last week.

It is possible McLeish will take the manager’s job until the end of the season, giving the board time to consider the right man long-term.

Others in the frame include Alan Pardew, whose odds have shortened to make him third favourites with bookmakers, Derek McInnes, Billy Davies, Frank de Boer and Tommy Wright.

Further meetings are planned in London over the coming days with Graeme Murty expected to remain in charge for Friday’s game with Inverness.

Murty has overseen two games so far – a cup win over Greenock Morton and Sunday’s defeat to Dundee.
