Natalie Portman calls out the Golden Globes for only nominating male directors — see the sheepish look on their faces

  • Natalie Portman presented the 2018 Golden Globe for best director
  • Before announcing the nominations, she emphasized that all of the nominees were males.
  • The camera panned over several male directors who looked rather uncomfortable.

Sunday’s Golden Globes were one of the most empowering award shows in recent memory. Actors and actresses wore black to make a statement against sexual misconduct. Female winners used their speeches to speak on behalf of various causes. Even presenters took their time at the mic to make a statement. At least, that’s what Natalie Portman did when she slammed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for failing to nominate any women for the best director category.

Portman, along with director Ron Howard, presented the award for best director. Prior to listing the nominations, Portman made sure to point out that the category only featured male nominees.

“And here are the all male nominees,” Portman said.

The camera stayed on Howard, who gave Portman a nod of approval, before panning to a sheepish looking Guillermo del Toro, who went on to win the award.

According to Glamour, a female director hasn’t won a Golden Globe in over 25 years — a staggering statistic given the number of women creating quality films every year. And given the increasing demand for equality and the number of award-worthy work this year — Greta Gerwig‘s “Lady Bird,” Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman,” and Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” to name a few — it was disheartening for many to see only men nominated for the award.

Viewers at home were quick to note and applaud Portman’s dig.

If there was an award for best presenter, we’re sure Portman would have won.
