Monarch: Fifth of passengers flown home

More than 110,000 customers were stranded abroad after the airline collapsed and cancelled all flights.

By Tuesday, 23,321 people had been flown back according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and a further 11,091 were due to be brought home yesterday.

The remaining 76,340 customers are expected to be back in the UK by October 15.

The collapse announced at the weekend has affected 860,000 customers, with only 15 per cent expected to receive automatic refunds.

The majority of bookings were not protected by the Air Travel Organiser’s Licence. Customers who booked before December 14, 2016, can apply for refunds from the CAA. If flights were booked on a credit card and totalled more than £100, holidaymakers can apply for a refund.

Richard Moriarty, of the CAA, said: “Customers who booked directly with Monarch Holidays using a credit card should contact their credit card issuer to make a claim for a refund.

All other Monarch Holidays and all First Aviation Limited customers will be sent a claim form by October 11, either directly by us or via their travel agent.”

Monarch is making 1,858 of 2,100 staff redundant. Administrators at KPMG are considering breaking up the company for sale after they failed to find an interested buyer
