Masters: Australia’s hopes of donning the Green Jacket at this year’s Masters look pretty good.

WORLD No.1 Dustin Johnson’s fall on a staircase has thrown further uncertainty over a Masters tournament facing blustery, high winds on the first two days.

The pre-tournament favourite, Johnson became a doubtful starter when he injured his lower back in a fall at his rented house in Augusta.

His final group tee time became a blessing in disguise as the 32 -year-old American – the winner of all three of his 2017 tournaments – races the clock to be fit to tee off.

“He landed very hard on his lower back and is now resting, although quite uncomfortably,” Johnson’s manager David Winkle said in an email. “He has been advised to remain immobile and begin a regimen of anti-inflammatory medication and icing, with the hope of being able to play tomorrow.”

The freak accident caused Johnson’s betting odds to blow out, making him third favourite behind countryman Jordan Spieth – who has a win and two runner-ups from three Masters starts – with Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy second favourite as he chases a career grand slam of major titles.

However the weather is set to have a big say as the 94-man field faces brutal winds on an already tough Augusta National course.

Gusts of up to 60km/h are forecast for the two opening rounds, conditions that could help the five-man Australian contingent – Adam Scott, Jason Day, Marc Leishman, veteran Rod Pampling and No.1 amateur Curtis Luck – who grew up dealing with wind on Australian coastal courses. “I don’t know if it can get more difficult conditions than windy here,” said 2013 Masters champion Scott, who believed wise heads would prevail.

“In the wind you have to have the patience and experience of knowing when to press or not.” Relishing the prospect of blustery conditions is in-form Marc Leishman, who feels mastering his craft in coastal Victoria’s windy Warrnambool affords him an edge.

The 33-year-old Leishman will tee off at Augusta with a win and two top-10s among seven top-25s in nine US PGA Tour events this season.

“Yeah I enjoy playing in the wind and tougher conditions and that’s half the battle. You have to enjoy it,” said Leishman.
