Star’s cheeky umpire moment

Umpire contact has been at the forefront of conversations all season long in the AFL and on Saturday afternoon we saw another, although it was a little different than most.

Melbourne’s star midfielder Angus Brayshaw had torched the Western Bulldogs all day long and his form clearly earned him special treatment.

Towards the end of the third quarter and with the Demons comfortably in front, Brayshaw broke away from the backline and his wayward kick rolled out of bounds.

While lucky to have not been pinged for a deliberate out of bounds, Brayshaw showed his appreciation for getting off the hook to umpire Ray “Razor” Chamberlain.

“I’m not sure you’re allowed to high-five or low-five the umpire like we just saw there, but Brayshaw and Razor just shared one,” David King said on the commentary.

The moment caught the Western Bulldogs’ coaches box off guard and split social media down the middle with half saying that shouldn’t happen while the rest were more than ok with the moment.

Brayshaw however labelled it just “a bit of fun” and believes there is nothing wrong with it.

“I fully expected to have a free kick paid against me, so it was a nice little surprise when ‘Razor’ looked after me, so I thought, ‘You know what? Why not give a little high five and show him my gratitude?’ Brayshaw told afl.com.au.

“Normally they’re pretty hot on it, so what’s wrong with a little bit of player-umpire love going both ways? Hopefully they don’t fine me for intentional conduct, but it was a bit of fun.”
