KYRIE Irving has dropped one of the most stunning trade bombshells in NBA history, requesting a move away from the Cavaliers – largely because of LeBron James.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst broke the story, reporting that Irving requested the trade last week directly to Cavs owner Dan Gilbert. Irving expressed a desire to break free of James and be a bigger “focal point” for a team.

ESPN also reported that Irving had supplied a list of teams he would be happy to be traded to, which included the New York Knicks – who are currently trying to deal with Carmelo Anthony’s desire to be traded (Houston the preferred destination, at this stage).

Adrian Wojnarowski then reported Irving’s interest in joining the San Antonio Spurs, who have legend Tony Parker and Aussie Patty Mills at point guard.

Windhorst wrote of LeBron’s reaction: “James was informed of Irving’s request and was blindsided and disappointed, sources said. Other members of the team have learned of Irving’s intentions in recent days as well.”

Irving, No.1 pick for the Cavs in the 2011 draft, expressed misgivings about the franchise recently in a Sports Illustrated interview. Cleveland has barely added to its roster this off-season, having been soundly beaten by Golden State in last season’s NBA Finals.

“We just have to, you know, make sure that all our pieces are aligned first, and then we go from there,” Irving told the magazine. “It’s the summertime, a lot of craziness going on in the NBA.”

Irving has three years and $ 60 million left on his contract. He can opt out for free agency in 2019. Meanwhile, James – who has been touted to again leave Cleveland amid unrest with the franchise – is a free agent after next season, making the Irving situation even more delicate.

Irving averages 21.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game across his career. Last season, he averaged a career-high 25.2 points and 5.8 assists per game. He is a four-time All Star.
