James Rodriguez to Man Utd: Real Madrid chief dashes Jose Mourinho's transfer hopes

Manchester United are being heavily linked with a move for the Real Madrid star, who looks increasingly likely to leave the Bernabeu this summer.

Rodriguez was restricted to just 32 appearances as the club won La Liga and the Champions League, and was omitted from Zinedine Zidane’s squad for the 4-1 final win over Juventus earlier this month.

Reports in Spain say United are frontrunners for his signature, with Diario Gol reporting that the player had agreed personal terms with Jose Mourinho’s team.

But club president Florentino Perez has moved to quell talk that Rodriguez will be leaving.

He told esRadio: “He is one of the best players in the world, he belongs to Madrid and Madrid players do not leave when they want to or their parents want them to.

“We have to match the interests of the players with ours, but mostly those of Madrid.”

Rodriguez has three years left on his Real contract, and has been at the club since signing in a £60million deal from Monaco in 2014.

However, the Colombia international is not the only Madrid star being linked with a move to the Premier League.

Alvaro Morata is also wanted by Mourinho with reports suggesting the Red Devils had agreed ‘everything’ with the player.

But, speaking on Tuesday night, Perez insisted Real were not in negotiations with United.

“I don’t think we’re in negotiations with Manchester United, which is not to say that there are people around him who are talking, which is normal,” he told esRadio’s El Primer Palo show.

“I have read that we have reached an agreement, I do not know how many million times, but it is not true.”
