How to avoid the passport renewal price increase this month – by applying by THIS date

Passport costs are to increase later this month, as the Government announces a price hike for Britons.

A passport renewal online will increase by £3 when applying for one online.

In a bid to deter people from using the slower postal service, applying by post is set to increase by £12.50.

Yet when is the last date to apply for one without getting an extra fee and how can you avoid the additional cost?

The date of the cost increase is Tuesday 27 March, so anyone with their passport expiring soon should apply before then.

Up to nine months left on a passport will be added to the new passport.

With a standard British passport offering 10 years of travel, it means up to 10 years and nine months is the maximum time one would allow.

Therefore anyone whose passport runs out in December 2018 should still get a new one to avoid the cost.

It is also worth noting that some countries have strict border controls meaning that passports with less than six months left may be prohibited.

Adults who choose to renew theirs online will need to pay £75.50 after the increase whilst those posting it will be charged a whopping £85.

Anyone who is also changing their name due to a marriage or divorce will also be forced to get a new passport.

Yet leaving it to the last minute is not recommended as it can take up to three weeks to process.

With just over three weeks till the price increase, it is wise to do it today to avoid it being processed after the price increase.

Surprisingly, the British passport is not the most expensive in the world.

Australia takes the title for the priciest travel document, having increased to £159 in 2018.

Other expensive countries include Turkey (£145), Switzerland (£112) and Mexico (£103).
