Harry Kane calls on England band of brothers to down Sweden in World Cup quarter-final

The captain says the team spirit, belief and confidence gained from their shoot-out win over Colombia can help them conquer bogey side Sweden in the quarter-finals.

Asked what he felt when he looked round the dressing room, the striker said: “Just like family really. I look at them as my brothers, and they do the same. We will do anything for each other.

“Definitely there’s a hunger because of the other night. When you go through a battle like that, it gives you so much energy and belief to go and do it again.

“We’re hungry for more. We love that feeling. If it goes to extra time and penalties, we’ll be ready for that. We’re ready to do whatever it takes.

“We’ve spent a lot of time together. We all get on very well. I spoke about the togetherness and trust before the tournament, but we want to prove it on the pitch and show we can do that.

“We have done that so far. It’s made us even stronger. That joy in everyone’s face the other night. We want to make the country proud again.”

Golden Boot contender , who has been likened by Gareth Southgate to England’s rugby hero Jonny Wilkinson for his steely-eyed focus when taking penalties, says the players won’t be fazed if it goes to another shoot-out.

“We know this game could be the same, going all the way to penalties, but we have that in the bank now,” he said. “We know we can come through the other side.”

But he insists England will not fall into the trap of under-estimating the unfancied Swedes, who will have only one player playing in the Premier League next season.

“People will say we have better individuals who play for bigger clubs but it’s about how you play as a team,” he added. “I wouldn’t say they have loads of individuals who stand out but it’s shown over this tournament and over the years that means nothing. All that matters is you work hard, have belief and stick together.

“There’s no reason we should treat them any differently to any other side we’ve faced so far. Their record speaks for itself. They are defensively very strong, very compact.

“They’ve had a great tournament so far, got some great results and that’s down to their team. The best bit about them is they are together and stick together on the pitch.”

If Kane scores today he will become only the second player since 1974 to score more than six goals in a World Cup – Brazil’s Ronaldo was the other in 2002.
