Google Maps ERROR: Tourists searching for iconic landmark reach dead-end street instead

Google Maps has almost all corners of the globe covered. But a task that big allows a little room for error.

Tourists in Australia found out the hard way that there was a mistake in Google Maps’ location of an iconic landmark.

The Three Sisters are a group of iconic rock formations in the Blue Mountains of the state of New South Wales.

It’s a very popular sight for travellers from all over the world.

But many tourists have been disappointed to make the lengthy drive out to see the natural attraction, only to find a dead-end street.

Google Maps directed travellers to a quiet cul-de-sac over 30 minutes’ drive away from the Three Sisters.

Instead of arriving at the Blue Mountains, tourists stopped at the end of Valley View Road in Dargan.

The incorrect site is 30km north of Katoomba, where the Three Sisters are found.

Locals in Dargan reported seeing huge numbers of tourists turn up to the cul-de-sac, flooding their quiet rural street.

The situation grew imposing enough for one resident to construct a sign saying: “Blue Mountains is not here. Google Maps is wrong. You need to go to Katoomba or Blackheath.”

One tourist, Waleed Mehar, posted to Facebook earlier this year with a picture of the sign, after spending 2.5hrs trying to reach the Blue Mountains.

Google has now fixed the problem, acknowledging the scope for error in the mammoth task of creating Maps.
