French protesters have planned a “No Trump Zone” ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit Friday.
Members of the “Paris Against Trump” group have planned several events in an effort to show their displeasure with the U.S. president’s visit on Bastille Day, France’s national holiday.
The group will conduct its “No Trump Zone” event Thursday night at the Place de la Republique. It will include music and dancing, according to the group’s Facebook page.
“Trump is not welcome in Paris,” said the Facebook event page. “We are opposed to his positions on the climate crisis, his international politics against migrants, his sexist speeches and behavior, his Islamophobia and racist remarks, his military plans around the world and his neo-liberalism and capitalism.”
The “No Trump Zone” will be followed by a “Don’t Let Your Guard Down Against Trump” march Friday. Some Americans will participate in the events, according to an NBC news report.
Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the infamous Bastille prison during the French revolution in 1789, but it also traditionally celebrates the historically special relationship between the U.S. and France.
U.S. forces from the 1st Army Division, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps will participate in the military parade as part of the celebration.
France’s interior ministry has activated approximately 86,000 security officers in an effort to secure the nationwide celebrations from terror attacks. The French city of Nice fell victim to a particularly deadly terror attack during last year’s Bastille Day celebrations. Both Nice and Paris will see an especially large deployment of police and military forces.
French citizens in general have a negative opinion of Trump, including French President Emmanuel Macron himself. Macron recently criticized Trump for removing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement last month. Regardless, he still invited Trump to join in the Bastille Day celebrations, and plans to host the president and first lady for a dinner at a famous restaurant on the Eiffel Tower Thursday evening.
