Federer breezes into fourth round

ROGER Federer has swept imperiously to within sight of a record 21st grand slam crown after demolishing Frenchman Adrian Mannarino to safely reach the fourth round.

Blazing through the first set in 16 minutes, Federer underlined his reputation as the best front-runner in tennis with a controlled 6-0 7-5 6-4 success in 105 minutes.

“It was great to win that first set so quickly. It was important for me to stay focused,” Federer said.

“I didn’t miss much. I was very happy with the match and very pleased to be back into the second week.

Contesting Wimbledon for a 20th time, Federer reached the last eight here for the 16th time – a reminder of phenomenal consistency and excellence.

Posting his 95th win from 106 matches at the All England Club, Federer will next face either South African eighth seed Kevin Anderson or Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Federer’s latest scalp delivered a record 53rd major quarter-final and extended his streak of consecutive won sets to 32 – just shy of the mark he set between 2005-06.

Chasing a 21st major and ninth Wimbeldon crown, Federer again employed his magnificent serve to devastating effect.

With 12 aces and only four double faults, the veteran did not drop serve in the match, meaning he has 81 service games in a row over four matches.

Restricting Mannarino to 18 winners while unleashing 44 of his own, Federer made just 20 unforced errors.
