Dana White gives big update on Nate Diaz and Nick Diaz’s futures, reveals fight offers

The last time mixed martial arts fans saw one of the Diaz brothers grace the Octagon was nearly two years ago in the main event of UFC 202, which saw Nate lock horns with Conor McGregor.

Nick, meanwhile, hasn’t fought since his January 2015 bout with Anderson Silva, though his near three-and-a-half-year hiatus was largely down to an 18-month suspension.

The brothers’ absence from the cage has led many to wonder if the brass want them to fight.

White insists the promotion want the pair back inside the Octagon and has claimed they’ve have been offered multiple bouts.

“We’ve been offering Nate Diaz fights for however long,” he said during the latest episode of UFC Unfiltered.

“In his contract – and Nick Diaz’s – I have to give them three fights a year. Per the contract, I need to give them three fights a year.

“If I fail to give them three fights a year, I have to pay them.

“I have honoured my contract with those guys, they keep turning down the fights, which extends the contracts.

“But, we’re working right now to try put together a Georges St-Pierre versus Nate Diaz fight.”

While many, including White, have doubts over whether we’ll see the Diaz brothers back inside the cage, the same can’t be said of their good friend Jake Shields.

“I think he’ll fight again as well,” the .

“He’s been training. He still trains a lot. When I’m out there. He pretty much trains every day. I know he wants to fight. He loves training, he’s in there. He just wants to make sure it’s a money fight, and you can’t blame him.

“When he made those two Conor paydays, it’s hard for him to step in unless it’s a big fight. So I’d certainly hold out for him as well.”

When pressed on Nick’s mixed martial arts career, Shields added: “I think he will (fight again). I think he’ll fight again soon.

“I think he’s missing it. The training, a little bit. I haven’t been out there so I don’t know much he’s been training, but I’m pretty sure he’s been in the gym a decent amount.

“I would love to see him fight again. I think he’s still got some more in him.

“He hasn’t been training as much but he’s still in good shape and ready to come back fast.”
