Cruise secrets: AVOIDING this popular activity could give you access to huge discounts

For many, a cruise may be a once in a lifetime experience, meaning many people want to make the most of the opportunities that are available while you’re there. This can often include seeing live performances, lazing by the open air swimming pool, and dining in stylish restaurants. On-board spas are also something many guests choose to seek out. However, just like spa treatments on dry land, this indulgent cruise activity can often come at a cost.

Luckily for thrifty readers, an expert has revealed that there is a way for travellers to make their money go further – without missing out on a trip to the spa.

Earlier this year, Simon Hoe, Global Head of Marketing at Cruise1st exclusively revealed his top tips for bagging the best onboard deals.

And, it seems that there could be a prime time for you to potentially book in for a spa treatment at a bargain price.

Simon explained that when the ship arrives at a port, the cruise lines will dramatically cut their price points on spa treatments.

That’s because many of the guests are likely to disembark the ship for some time, in order to explore the area.

With demand for the spa treatments dropping, the team can sometimes offer the guests who have chosen to remain on-board a huge discount.

Simon explained: “Cruise lines tend to ramp up the discounts, offers and reductions on things like spa treatments and dining when in port.

“If nothing takes your fancy onshore, staying in port is an excellent way to treat yourself without splashing out.”

Another word of advice from Simon is about when to book a future cruise.

If you’ve enjoyed the experience so much that you can’t wait to book the next one, doing just that before your current trip ends could save you a small fortune.

Simon spilled: “If you’ve caught the cruise bug and can’t wait for your next one, then a lot of cruise lines let you book your next one while you’re still sailing, which can be a big money saver, allowing for all sorts of exclusive cabin upgrades, all-inclusive offers and reduced single supplements too.”

While travelling on a cruise, passengers may be left slightly concerned if they hear a member of the crew uttering the word “banana” near them.

That’s because it’s rumoured that this fruit could actually serve as a secret code word.

According to, this is used by some members of the team in order to subtly call out a passenger for being a “bad tipper”.

And, while leaving gratuity may not be required, this secret message is certainly not meant to be complementary.
