Cruise news: Cruise liners are to INCREASE gratuity charges for passengers

Cruise holidays are a great way to see the world without the hassle of booking flights and hotels.

They can also be a pricey trip with many costing thousands of pounds.

Many may not realise what the tipping etiquette is when it comes to being on a cruise ship.

Do you tip on a cruise holiday or not?

Tips on a cruise ship are often added onto the price, meaning passengers should offer a tip to the people working on the ship and their room steward.

Cruise ship P&O Cruises is increasing their gratuity by 17 per cent, according to The Telegraph.

This means the daily room charge tip will go up from £6 to £7, having already increased just 12 months ago from £5.

This means that, for a couple on a two week cruise, the cost of the total tip for the room will increase from £168 to £196.

P&O informed their passengers that the changes will come into place for cruises after 23 March.

They stated: “We know that rewarding really good service as it happens just isn’t convenient so our Service Reward Programme provides a simple one-off way for you to say thank you for all the service you receive.

“For cruises departing 23rd March 2018 onward this amount changes for each guest (over 12 years of age) to £7 per day.”

Unless the tip is asked to be removed, it is expected to be paid for on top of the room as a thank you to cruise staff.

Royal Caribbean have also increased their from $ 14.50 to $ 18.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) previously told Express.co.uk: “The vast majority of cruise passengers are happy to reward crew members for good service and they find the information and guidelines provided by cruise companies to be accurate and helpful.

“These tips are not compulsory and may be taken off or amended at a passengers’ discretion and we would always encourage passengers to discuss any issues they may have whilst still on board the ship.”
