Chris Woakes injury: England star ruled out for the remainder of the ICC Champions Trophy

Woakes was forced off during England’s opener against Bangladesh yesterday.

Eoin Morgan’s side successfully chased down 306 to win the opening game of the tournament but did so at a cost.

Woakes picked up a side strain after bowling just two overs and had to leave the field.

And he will now miss the remainder of the tournament and England will call up a replacement.

“A scan has confirmed that Chris Woakes sustained a left side strain in yesterday’s ICC Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh,” an England statement read.

“The injury means Woakes will miss the rest of England’s participation in the Champions Trophy.

“An update on a replacement for the seamer for the remainder of the tournament will follow in due course.”

England are next in action against New Zealand on Tuesday in Cardiff.

New Zealand play their first game against Australia today at Edgbaston.

England are expected to call up a replacement for Woakes later today with Stuart Broad and Steven Finn candidates.

But yesterday Morgan admitted losing Woakes would be a huge blow.

“He’s obviously been very impressive for us over the last couple of years, and a mainstay, very reliable guy. And it is a worry when he goes off the field and can’t come back on and bowl,” he said.

“Side strains are a big confidence thing, aren’t they. But yes, he would definitely be a loss if he couldn’t play.”
