Chiefs cornerback throws referee’s flag into stands, leaves game, then returns moments later without socks in bizarre sequence

• Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters threw a referee’s penalty flag into the stands after a call.
• Peters then left the game, thinking he had been ejected.
• Moments later, Peters returned after being told he had not been ejected for the play.

Some confusion over a penalty led to Kansas City Chiefs cornerback leaving a game against the New York Jets, then returning moments later.

In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs were called for holding in the end zone on a Jets two-point attempt. Peters, out of frustration, grabbed the referee’s penalty flag and threw it into the stands.

Thinking he had been ejected, Peters then walked off the field and walked into the locker room tunnel amid some confusion on the field.

According to Stacey Dales of NFL Network, a Chiefs staff member ran into the locker room to tell Peters he had not been ejected. Peters then returned to the field, wearing no socks, perhaps a sign that he truly thought his day was over.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed after the game that Peters thought he had been ejected.

The Chiefs lost to the Jets, 38-31, their sixth loss in seven games.
