Chaos in Ibiza after cleaners' strike turns airport into 'disgusting’ rubbish heap

The Spanish island is popular with British holidaymakers but tourists have been warned to watch out if travelling to Ibiza over the next few days.

Cleaners at the airport went on strike over a pay dispute on Wednesday.

The area has since become covered in filth as bins overflow and rubbish litters the floors.

Video showed piles of trash built up around public areas, with old food, plastic bottles and even nappies strewn across the floors.

British tourists have been shocked and disgusted by the sight, taking to social media to vent their outrage.

Twitter user VCHarvey said: “Ibiza airport is absolutely disgusting and unsanitary. Rubbish everywhere, toilets overflowing. Time to pay the cleaners #payyourstaff.”

Sarra Hoy wrote: “The cleaners are on strike at Ibiza airport and it’s carnage.”

Kayleigh Barton from Liverpool is flying back from Ibiza on Wednesday and said the sight of the airport on her way in made her feel sick.

She told the Echo: “It’s vile. I am so disappointed in Ibiza airport and the management, I can’t stop thinking about it, it’s ruining the last few days of my holiday.

“I can’t believe how many bottles, and even dirty nappies are on the floor.

“I’m gutted I’ve got to fly home in that airport, it’s making me nervous.

“They’re saying you can’t use toilets and have to wait until you’re on the aeroplane.”

easyJet has warned its passengers about the effects of the cleaners’ strike, saying: “The cleaning company for the terminal buildings at Ibiza airport have announced a strike from the 17th May.

“Please be aware that during this time the terminal and facilities in the building may not be cleaned.
