Birmingham Airport CHAOS as staff sickness causes long delays and lost luggage

Birmingham Airport travellers have had their holidays delayed after a huge number of staff members called in sick, causing chaos to the airport.

Ground handler Swissport stated that 20 to 30 staff called in sick earlier this week, amounting to a quarter of the team needed on the ground.

This then caused huge delays to people attempting to make their way to boarding, as well as many suitcases going missing.

Many people took to Twitter to complain about the check-in queues and lack of baggage on the planes.

Twitter user Steve Cox tweeted an image showing the long queues for bag drop.

He tweeted: “This bag drop is beyond a joke at Birmingham airport.”

Another user Steve Comar wrote: “Birmingham airport need to improve their SLA’s. Shortage of baggage staff means not a single bag gets loaded on flight to San Francisco.”

Many others reported being on holiday without any luggage still.

It is one of the busiest times of the year with the summer holidays starting for families.

An airport spokesperson told the Birmingham Mail: “The airport regrets to inform passengers travelling from Birmingham that they may suffer delays today as a result of Swissport’s staff absence.

“Birmingham Airport is doing everything in its power to support Swissport, and sincerely apologises for the impact this is having on passengers travelling through Birmingham.”

Express Online has contacted Birmingham Airport for comment.

It comes just after passengers at Gatwick Airport were also stranded at the airport, albeit for different reasons.

Many travellers landed to find that a parking company at the airport had gone bust.

Many of them struggled to find their cars afterwards, with over 120 cars affected.

A quarter has yet to be discovered.
