Australia to BAN convicted paedophiles from travelling abroad

Convicted paedophiles in Australia are to be banned from travelling abroad, it has been revealed.

The Federal Government has announced new legislation to prevent any child sex offenders from leaving the country without permission.

This is to be carried out by blocking their passports so they cannot slip through the system.

It is set to be the world’s toughest policy on child sex offenders.

The move could prevent up to 20,000 paedophiles on the sex offender register from travelling.

By being on the register, it will prevent them from escaping the country to go on and offend in other countries.

Victorian senator Derryn Hinch tweeted about the ruling after the changes were passed.

“My campaign to ban convicted paedophiles going overseas on child rape holidays is successful” he tweeted.

Foreign minister Julie Bishop said the measure was a “world first” for the new laws taking place.

She went on to state: “Last year alone, almost 800 registered child sex offenders travelled overseas from Australia.”

Sex offences by convicted Australian paedophiles is also a huge concern in South East Asia, with the short flight across to the foreign country.

However with this, alongside the punishment of up to 25 years in prison, it is a welcome step forward to prevent further offences.
