In one of the most anticipated heavyweight bouts in recent years, the Principality Stadium and millions around the world tuned in to watch two of the best fighters in the division take on each other for the WBO, WBA and IBF titles.
A chance to become the first heavyweight boxer to unify the division with all four belts is the trophy for either fighter with the winner set to take on Deontay Wilder.
The opening rounds were tentative as both boxers figured each other out before they started to open up.
But fans were left venting their anger on Twitter as the referee repeatedly stopped both fighters as they got tangled up.
One fan said: “This referee is a disgrace.”
While another said: “This referee should not be doing a fight this big. He’s ruining it.”
It got too much for one viewer who said: “The referee is going to separate them for throwing punches soon.”
Giuseppe Quartarone is the man in the middle and has refereed a world heavyweight title fight before, overseeing Alexander Povetkin’s bout against Cedric Boswell in 2011.
He has also previously worked bouts involving Scott Quig, Martin Murray, Chris Eubank Jr and Kid Galahad.
