Andy Carroll has backed himself to make the England World Cup squad

The West Ham striker has not made an appearance for his national side for five years.

Injuries have been detrimental to the 28-year-old’s career, who was given his international debut at 21 by Fabio Capello.

But the powerful forward believes if he can kick on in the Premier League this season then he may be given a place on the plane to Russia.

“It would be nice to be in the squad,” he told Sky Sports. “It is nice to be spoken about in that way.

“All I have got to do is work hard and hopefully get the call, but at the minute I am focused on getting fully fit here, scoring goals and getting good results.

“If I deserve it, hopefully I will get the call.”

Carroll has made only four appearances for the Hammers this season, but he is now hoping to have put his past woes behind him.

The former Newcastle hitman claims he “definitely” still has something to give to Gareth Southgate’s side.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane currently leads the line for the Three Lions and he netted both goals in the 1-0 wins against Slovenia and Lithuania which ensured qualification.

Despite Kane’s form of 15 goals in 10 games, Carroll is confident he can force his way into the reckoning.

“I am confident of what I can do and it is different to what they have got at the minute,” Carroll added. “I am fully confident of my ability.

“I am feeling good; I am feeling a lot sharper than I did at the beginning of the season, getting back fit. I have had a run of games. In training, I feel a lot sharper, not 100 per cent yet but I am getting there.”
