A White House transcript is mistakenly linking Chinese President Xi Jinping to the Republic of China, which is Taiwan’s formal name.

The White House released the transcript of President Donald Trump’s public remarks with Xi at the start of a bilateral meeting at an international summit in Germany on Saturday.

Xi is leader of the People’s Republic of China and Trump has been seeking his help in addressing North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.

The Chinese leader has told Trump previously that Beijing expects Washington to continue managing relations based on the “One China” principle that rules out formal contacts with Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory.

The White House did not immediately comment on the diplomatic blunder.
