BBL news: Atiba Lyons praises Sheffield Sharks after ‘nightmare’ Surrey Scorchers win

The wintry weather led to the Sharks’ BBL Championship game at Surrey Scorchers being put back an hour after the team coach got stuck in traffic on the way to Guildford.

However, the snow couldn’t stop the Sharks and neither could the Scorchers as Sheffield recorded an 89-84 victory.

“We were on the bus for over six hours and only had about ten minutes warm-up when we arrived,” said the Sharks’ boss.

“We got off to a great start and played really well.”

Five Sharks players finished the game in double-digit scoring and Lyons was full of praise for Zach Gachette, who contributed 16 points off the bench.

“It was a great team performance and it’s been a while since we had that continuity with our scoring,” said Lyons.

He added, “I think Zach is finding his groove again and feeling comfortable.

“He’s one of the better British players in the country so I’m happy he’s getting his groove back as he brings energy and is a great defender.”

The victory was just the response that Lyons wanted to see from his team after they had suffered a disappointing defeat on Friday.

The Sharks had led Worcester Wolves by 11 points in the first leg of their BBL Cup Semi-final, but after the Wolves mounted a comeback, Lyons’ side ended up on the wrong end of a 102-92 scoreline.

“It’s still early in the season so it was important to see how we bounced back from games like that,” he said.

“I was very happy, as I think we showed great resilience, great character and it was a good win for us.”
