FIFA investigating Cahill’s new goal celebration

FIFA is investigating reports that Tim Cahill was paid for a sponsored goal celebration during Australia’s 2-1 win against Syria on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old scored both Australia’s goals and he celebrated his extra-time winner by making a ‘T’ sign with his hands.

Shortly afterwards, Australian online travel agency TripADeal posted this on Instagram: “Did you catch @tim_cahill, our new brand ambassador, doing the TripADeal ‘T’ after he scored the winning goal last night? Congratulations Tim!’,”.

The post has since been deleted, but a spokesperson for the governing body said: “FIFA is reviewing and analysing the reports from the referees and the match commissioners for all matches in FIFA competitions. Events which require further attention may be communicated accordingly.”

In 2012 Denmark forward Nicklas Bendtner was fined £80,000 (A$ 135,651) by UEFA for exposing sponsored underwear.

Cahill plays his club football with Melbourne City after signing from Chinese club Hangzhou Greentown in 2016.

Cahill made over 200 Premier League appearances for Everton between 2004 and 2012.
