Man United boss Jose Mourinho takes swipe at Arsene Wenger as he rules out top-four finish

“Arsenal fans are happy and I’m happy for them. It’s the first time I have left and they’re happy. I leave Highbury – they were crying,” said manager

“I leave the Emirates before this – and they were crying, walking the streets with heads low.

“They left waving their scarves. It’s a big club. You think I enjoy a big club like Arsenal not winning trophies? I don’t enjoy it.

“Arsene Wenger is a big manager. To have that record of winning so many matches is not normal.

“I really don’t care about it. We shook hands. During the game I don’t like what I never like – he puts too much pressure on the fourth official every time.”

Mourinho’s team went down to two goals in three minutes at the Emirates, as Granit Xhaka and Danny Welbeck struck as he saw his side’s 25-match unbeaten run come to a crashing halt.

He has already said he is concentrating on winning the Europa League as his team’s only realistic chance of making the Champions League next term and the Portuguese made eight changes from the side that earned a 1-0 lead from the first leg of the semi-final against Celta Vigo on Thursday.

“We didn’t deserve to lose. The game was under control. I’m very happy with the players – they surprised me in a positive way,” said Mourinho.

Of the top four? “It is impossible,” he said. “I don’t think the others playing one match a week are going to lose. And because we go with everything on Thursday in the Europa League and cannot go with everything at Tottenham in the League next week. I don’t think we have any chance of the top four. We have to chase the Champions League by trying to win the Europa League.”

Arsenal, however, did their chances of a place in the top four a power of good, especially with Liverpool only drawing with Southampton at Anfield earlier in the day.

The Gunners are now six points off the top four but have games in hand over Liverpool and Manchester City.

Wenger, whose side go to Southampton on Wednesday, said: “We needed to be patient. Going in at half-time at nil-nil gave us a chance to win because we had started nervous and under pressure.

Slowly we became better and in the second half controlled the game. The first goal was quite lucky, the second goal was a great goal.

“I’m happy for Danny Welbeck, hopefully that goal will give him confidence.

“We have a big game on Wednesday. They are good team. We need to be calm and focused. We still have a chance mathematically of the top four – and we need some help from teams around us.”

Arsenal have a doubt about Xhaka for the game at St Mary’s – with the Swiss international still struggling with an ankle injury.
