‘I imagine myself living back in England’: Burgess hints at Super League return

Speculation is raging about the future of the Burgess twins, who have been linked with a move to Canterbury if they lose Kangaroos prop David Klemmer.

Both Tom and brother George are off-contract at the end of 2019 and Souths are facing salary cap pressure .

The 26-year-old has not ruled out returning to England at some point in the future.

“I always like to imagine myself living back in England, at least at some point, and perhaps playing for a Super League club,” he said.

“I’d never say never and like to keep my options open. I have got one more year at Souths.”

However Burgess is delighted Wayne Bennett will be taking over at South Sydney after witnessing the veteran coach’s revitalisation of the England team.

Prop Burgess developed a close bond with Bennett during international duty and is now excited about what he will bring to his NRL club at Redfern.

“Playing under him at Souths is definitely something to look forward to,” Burgess told AAP in England.

“I don’t know how different he would be at club level, but I’ve loved working with him.

“He’s just a great bloke more than anything and I class him as a friend. I was really excited when I heard the news.”

Whether Burgess’ reunion with Bennett at club level happens in the coming weeks remains an open question.

The 68-year-old is signed to join in 2020 with Souths coach Anthony Seibold replacing him at Brisbane, but the coach switch is widely expected to be brought forward to next season.

Either way, Burgess is a true believer after playing under Bennett for England.

With Bennett in charge of England for the past two years, England reached last year’s World Cup final and have just defeated resurgent New Zealand 2-1 in a Test series in the UK.

Bennett has won seven of his 11 Tests with England, with three of those four losses coming against the Kangaroos.

Burgess believes the seven-time premiership coach has changed the English mindset and they can now compete with Australia.

“I think we’ve probably become a bit more clinical under Bennett,” the front- rower admitted.

“He’s really brought that mindset of building pressure and having completion rates, which is something the NRL really prides itself on.

“Super League perhaps doesn’t consider that as important and it’s more of a free-flowing game where the ball is thrown around a lot.

“But to beat the Aussies and Kiwis, you have to match them at their own game and I think Bennett has brought that.”
