‘WE ARE CHELSEA’

18:12: Chelsea star Eden Hazard: ”Everyone was thinking to draw when they scored but we are Chelsea and we never give up. We did well, created a lot of chances and we deserved to win. I feel tired tonight, but the whole team is tired but we have the points.”

‘I FELT THE CONTACT’

18:10: Marcos Alonso maintains that Fabian Schar brought him down. I mean, what else was he going to say?! He’s also quite keen to bag the second goal too!

Marcos Alonso told Sky Sports: “I think I touched the ball and got in front of the opponent. It’s not that I felt the contact and went down, he made me. It was a good win and the three points are massive for us.”

On the second goal: “If the ball goes in the direction of the goal maybe it is mine.”

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Rob: We didn’t deserve to win playing like that, the penalty was unjust, but so was our equaliser in a way, and then Chelsea got winner they deserved for actually trying to win.

James: Refereeing is getting worse in the Premier League – this game was the tip of the iceberg. When will referees be held to account and asked to explain their actions.

Nicola: Yes! Important win that to keep the momentum going and show that we can break down that kind of team away from home.

NEWCASTLE 1-2 CHELSEA

FT: Finished. Chelsea continue their 100 percent start to the season with a crazy 2-1 win over Newcastle. Joselu thought he’d done enough for a point but a painful deflection off DeAndre Yedlin means the Blues join Liverpool and Watford at the top of the Premier League table.

94: Corner to Newcastle. Is this the moment?! Matt Ritchie trots over to take it… cleared. Marcos Alonso punts it away and that should be enough.

92: Chelsea doing well to keep the ball in the corners. Olivier Giroud is the main instigator.

90: Huge roar from the Newcastle fans as the referee shows there will be five minutes of added time.

89: Never has the need for Ron Burgundy’s ‘Boy, that escalated quickly’ meme been quite so strong. We endured a complete snoozefest for most of this match until Eden Hazard’s opener opened the floodgates.

NEWCASTLE 1-2 CHELSEA – YEDLIN OG

87: Ecstasy to agony for Newcastle as Chelsea re-take the lead just four minutes after Joselu’s leveller.

Willian sends a deep free-kick to the back post, where Olivier Giroud somehow keeps the ball alive. His knock-down finds Alonso, whose strike is deflected in by the outstretched leg of Yedlin.

NEWCASTLE 1-1 CHELSEA – JOSELU

83: We’ve waited about 80 minutes for this match to come alive, and boy has it!

Newcastle equalise five minutes after Eden Hazard’s controversial penalty, with a controversial goal of their own!

Yedlin’s stray elbow connects with Giroud’s face and the forward hits the deck. Chelsea switch off expecting the foul but nothing is given.

Yedlin then whips an excellent deliver to the near post, where Joselu glances it home.

79: Changes for Newcastle and Chelsea. Ross Barkley is on for Mateo Kovacic, while Rafa Benitez sends Muto on for Schar, who is still livid with the referee.

Richie: No way a penalty, Marcos Alonso knew he lost the ball, fell over and the referee bought it!

Sho: I really don’t understand why we’re the only league that doesn’t have VAR. Every week there have been massive decisions that could’ve been overturned including that penalty.

David: Awful refereeing decision, never a penalty! The defender clearly got his foot on the ball. The difference between a well earned point and a loss.

NEWCASTLE 0-1 CHELSEA – HAZARD

76: Eden Hazard steps up… converts emphatically into the top left-hand corner. It’s been a real grind but Chelsea have their noses in front.

PENALTY TO CHELSEA

75: Fabian Schar brings Marcos Alonso down inside the penalty area. The Spanish full-back has wriggled his way in front of the defender, who slid round from behind. Looks like he gets the ball in my eyes…

72: Woodwork! Good grief, something has happened! Antonio Rudiger decides to go direct and hammers a thunderbolt against the crossbar. Chelsea looking to turn up the heat now.

71: “Never seen a Newcastle side playing at home so devoid of ambition. This is just so modern Premier League – a manager of a non-buying club making a point to his owner,” that’s the opinion of journalist Ian Ridley. Another yellow card for Newcastle, as Matt Ritchie is booked for a foul on Hazard. The resulting free kick from Willian is cleared.

Second half possession stats: Chelsea have had 90 percent possession. That’s insane.

70: Here he comes. Willian comes on to replace Pedro for the final 20 minutes. Newcastle scraping like tigers for the point, and I have a sneaky suspicion they are going to bag one.

68: Alvaro Morata is replaced by World Cup winner Olivier Giroud. Perhaps the Frenchman can provide some entertainment.

66: Oh, I have an update for you in the passes completed competition. Chelsea have completed 226 since the resumption while Newcastle have 23. That’s how utterly dull it’s been.

Azpilicueta swings a cross into the six-yard box but Dubravka beats Morata to the punch and Newcastle clear. Schar booked for a clear foul on Hazard.

63: Newcastle make a change with Joselu replacing Rondon. Now that’s a game-changer if ever I’ve seen one.

60: We’ve reached the hour-mark (somehow) and things remain the same. Chelsea are passing it around without any real pace or penetration, while Newcastle are sitting deep, hoofing it into orbit whenever possible.

57:  Nice, nice, really nice… oh, he’s lost it. That’s pretty much been the pattern for Chelsea today. Azpilicueta and Pedro link up nicely down the right but Morata’s first touch is poor and Dubravka claims.

56: D’ya think Chelsea need Jorginho, Kante and Kovacic all playing together? Theres not enough creativity on the field for Chelsea, who need to start unpicking this Newcastle defence.

54: Chelsea load the box when Morata is felled near the left touchline but Hazard’s ‘cross’ rolls along the floor and fails to beat the first man. Dreadful set-piece, where’s Willian when you need him?

51: Chance for Chelsea, who have begun the second half on the front foot. Azpilicueta shoots, but Dubravka holds onto it well. There’s a bit of a higher tempo about the visitors since the re-start.

48: Did I mention that Chelsea won the first-half passes completed competition? 400 vs 44…

NEWCASTLE 0-0 CHELSEA

45: And we’re back underway. Please, just please can we have a better second half?!

Former Newcastle manager Graeme Souness summed it up pretty nicely on Sky Sports.

“It’s like Newcastle are playing a big European tie away from home. If that was the scenario, they’d be doing a great job. Disciplined, organised,” he said. “But Newcastle are a big football club, and I think people will be surprised at the way they’re playing. Certainly during my time here you had to have a real go at home, playing this way would not have been acceptable.

“But I think they’re getting away with it because there is so much-ill feeling towards the owner here, and the manager is, I think, playing on that fact somewhat. A brand of football that doesn’t excite.”

Moon: We need Olivier Giroud to bring some physical and height presence in our final 3rd. Newcastle are defending so deep. We need to shot more and put some good crosses in. Chelsea to win it surely!

Mark: Standard of refereeing in NEW-CHE isn’t fantastic. The blues (mainly Hazard) are taking a beating from the magpies, and no cards. Meanwhile Chelsea have received a card for a lot less. No players are getting protection, it’s ruining the game the the way it’s going!

Edin: Chelsea with 80% possesion and no shot on target… strange … very strange … something about ‘taste’ and ‘medicine’…

NEWCASTLE 0-0 CHELSEA

HT: Right, that’s lunch. That 45 minutes of football won’t live long in the memory. Newcastle have the bus firmly parked and Chelsea haven’t been able to shift it despite Eden Hazard’s best efforts.

45: Close! Eden Hazard stands up a cross for the overlapping Azpilicueta, whose half-volley is blocked when heading for the top left-hand corner.

One minute of added time.

43: It’s now 3-2 at Craven Cottage. I’m incredibly jealous that I’m watching this snoozefest instead.

Newcastle wine corner and after it pin-balls around the penalty area Hazard is able to hook it clear. The Toon look good for a draw at the break.

41: Scratch that, Fulham now lead 3-1. Mitrovic now has a brace. Remind me why Newcastle sold him again?

40: Five minutes until the break and we are goalless here at St James’ Park. They’ve got three down at Craven Cottage with former Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic grabbing the second.

38: Close! Pedro robs Ki just outside the penalty area before cutting inside and thwacking one high and wide. The debutant can’t afford to mess around with it there.

Pedro follows that up with an low drilled effort that Dubravka drops on. Chelsea looking sharper over the last few minutes.

35: Now here’s a chance for the hosts. Alonso chops down Yedlin on the right touchline and Matt Ritchie trots over to take.

He steps up… Alonso clears the first ball and Rondon then heads wide with a cross from th opposite flank.

33: Eden Hazard is just so good to watch. When he turns the jets on nobody can handle him. The Belgian spins past Diame before accelerating and firing wide.

30: Will this beautiful football bring trophies? I suppose we’ll find out. Chelsea are playing some nice possession-based football with a million passes but chances have been few and far between. Newcastle holding firm as Rudiger heads a corner straight at Dubravka.

27: Eden Hazard injects some pace when gliding past his marker and sending an effort wide of the post.

24: The cameras have just panned to Jonjo Shelvey sitting in the stands. He looks about as bored as we’re all feeling watching this. The Toon have everyone behind the ball and are looking to strangle the game.

21: It’s attack vs defence. Nothing more, nothing less as Eden Hazard goes down clutching his ankle again. There’s a lengthy break in play as the medical staff bolt onto the pitch like two FBI henchmen protecting the president.

18: Close! Marcos Alonso wins a corner for Chelsea. It’s sent into the box and Newcastle fail to clear. Eventually Rudiger lashes it with the outside of his boot. Miles high, miles wide.

17: Eden Hazard and Pedro with some nice intricate play around the Newcastle penalty area. Fernandez just about hacks the return pass clear but the ball just keeps coming back.

14: The possession statistics paint the story of this match. Chelsea have had 80 percent of the ball in the opening stages but haven’t really managed to test Dubravka. It’s patient stuff from the visitors and ruthlessly organised from the hosts.

11: I know you’re here for the game at St James’ Park but Jean Michael Seri has just put Fulham ahead against Burnley with an absolute thunderbolt. Worth watching MOTD for alone…

8: Murphy then forces Arrizabalaga into the first real save of the afternoon with a low drive from 25 yards. Not a bad start from the hosts, who are happy to absorb pressure and play exclusively on the break.

5: Interesting. Chelsea’s back four with attacking wingers is definitely going to leave them susceptible to the counter. Exhibit A is Jacob Murphy latching onto Ciaran Clark’s through ball and crosses, but Kepa Arrizabalaga catches it with Rondon waiting in the middle.

3: Ooooff! Chelsea get off to the worst possible start as Matt Ritchie rakes Eden Hazard down his Achilles’ heel. The Belgian limps before hitting the deck.

Maurizio Sarri would not have wanted to see that happen in the opening 30 seconds but Hazard is back on his feet again.

SARRI: I OWE RAFA A DEBT OF GRATITUDE

15:50: What’s this? Two Premier League managers being nice to each other? It’ll never catch on…

Maurizio Sarri admits he owes Rafael Benitez a debt of gratitude.

Chelsea boss Sarri took over from Benitez at Napoli in 2015 and led them to second place behind champions Juventus last season.

It was that success which led Chelsea to turn to the 59-year-old Italian to replace Antonio Conte this summer.

But Sarri insists it was his predecessor who laid the foundations, and he will get the chance to show his appreciation today.

“I have to say thank you to Rafa because when I arrived in Naples I had a feeling the team was almost ready to play my football,” he said. “If I arrived after another coach maybe for me it was more difficult, so I have to say thank you to him.”

WHERE’S LASCELLES?!

15:45: So, where the heck is Jamaal Lascelles?

The Newcastle captain has been a stalwart under manager Rafa Benitez, but he’s not even in the squad for today’s visit of Chelsea.

The Daily Mail claim Lascelles has been dropped because of a training ground argument with Benitez over Rafa’s decision to play three at the back.

It’s thought Lascelles was unhappy with the decision to change the system that earned them a clean sheet at Cardiff last weekend.

Ian: I just have no confidence in having a back four with David Luiz as a centre back when Andreas Christensen is our best in that position. The back three was fine but can see him being exposed so much today. Got away with it the first 3 games but a full season will cost us points.

Amy: Kovacic – Jorginho – Kante in the midfield. Premier League is not ready for this!

Craig: Understand NUFC skipper Jamaal Lascelles dropped by Rafa Benitez after training-ground fallout over manager’s decision to play three at back for today’s visit of Chelsea.

TEAM NEWS

15:40: Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles is conspicuous by his absence as manager Rafael Benitez rang the changes for today’s Premier League clash with Chelsea.

The influential defender, who was not even named among the substitutes amid rumours of a difference of opinion, was one of six men to make way with Benitez handing debuts to Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez and Ki Sung-yueng and a first start to Salomon Rondon, while Jacob Murphy and the fit-again DeAndre Yedlin also got the nod.

Chelsea made two changes to the side which beat Arsenal last weekend as Eden Hazard returned and loan signing Mateo Kovacic was handed a full debut.
