Tiger Woods makes shock announcement following Masters 2018 disappointment

The American has only recently returned to the golf course following surgery on a lower-back problem.

Impressive outings at the Valspar Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational had led to hopes he would end a 10-year wait for major tournament win.

But the 42-year-old was unable to finish any of the first three rounds below par.

Woods salvaged some pride on Sunday as he finished three-under par with a score of 69 – which put him on track for tied-32nd place but 15 shots off the leader Patrick Reed.

But after the completion of his final round he admitted he was taking a little time away from the game.

“I’m going to take a little break for sure,” Woods said.

“I’ll get back in the gym and start working on my body again.

“And get it in good shape.”

It is now unclear if Woods will return in time for the US Open in June.

However, his mentality before the competition was that he is still hungry to challenge the best players in the world.

“I still want to compete, and I want to beat these guys,” he said.
