Steve Smith QUITS as Australia cricket captain for rest of Test: Replacement named

“Following discussions with Steve Smith and David Warner they have agreed to stand down as captain and vice-Captain respectively for the remainder of this Test match,” a statement from Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland said.

After apparent ball-tampering was shown on the big screen during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town, Smith and team-mate Cameron Bancroft were forced to explain their actions to the media.

“I’m embarrassed, the boys in the shed are embarrassed and I feel for Cam as well,” Smith said.

“It is not what we want to see in the game, it’s not what the Australian cricket team is about.

“Being the leader of the team I am incredibly sorry for trying to bring the game into disrepute like we did today.”
