Jos Luhukay: Who is Sheff Wed boss? Why is he a promotion expert? Carlos Carvalhal talks?

The Owls axed Carlos Carvalhal on Christmas Eve and had 12 days of deliberations before confirming former Hertha Berlin and Augsburg boss Luhukay.

The 54-year-old is a relative unknown on these shores and takes charge for the first time against local rivals Sheffield United tonight (7.45pm).

Express Sport takes a look at the 33rd man to lead the club.

Who is Jos Luhukay?

Dutchman Luhukay is part of the new breed of managers, who enjoyed a less-than-successful playing career before stepping foot in the dugout.

The midfielder knocked around at hometown club VVV-Venlo, SVV Schiedam, RKC Waalwijk, SV Straelen before playing twice in the Bundesliga for KFC Uerdingen.

How did Jos Luhukay get into management?

Luhukay returned to German minnows SV Straelen for a second spell in the twilight of his playing career and became the club’s manager a month after hanging up his boots.

He then took up his place in the dugout at another former club KFC Uerdingen before becoming assistant coach at Bundesliga outfit Cologne.

Luhukay took up a managerial post at second-division side Paderborn in 2005 but was axed a year later in August.

What has Jos Luhukay achieved?

Luhukay is renowned in Germany as an expert in leading teams to the Bundesliga.

He guided Borussia Monchengladbach back to the top tier at the first time of asking in 2007 and repeated the trick at Augsburg in 2011.

Luhukay made it three promotions in 2013 as he led Hertha Berlin to the 2. Bundesliga title, breaking the record for most points on the way.

Incredibly, he notched up his fourth promotion to the Bundesliga last year, helping Stuttgart up in a short stint at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Owls fans will be praying he can bring some of that magic to Hillsborough.

What has Jos Luhukay been tasked with achieving this season?

Wednesday reached the play-offs in the last two seasons under Carvalhal and Luhukay has been tasked with getting the team – currently 16th in the Championship table – back into the promotion mix.

Despite having no experience of English football, Luhukay is confident of succeeding.

He said: “Football is football, it’s not different. I like to be here.

“I have seen a lot of games and I hope I can learn the players and their qualities very fast.

“The focus is to bring back the success that Wednesday had in the last two years.”

Has Jos Luhukay spoken to Carlos Carvalhal?

The new boss has picked his predecessor brains about the players at his disposal.

“We had a very good conversation together about football and this job here so I know a little bit more about the players and their mentality,” Luhukay said.

What has Jos Luhukay said about the Steel City derby?

The Championship is renowned for big fixtures and Luhukay could not have been given a tastier debut if he’d tried.

Speaking ahead of the trip to Sheffield United, he said: “It’s important for the team and for the players to have a good feeling after the game.

“Derbies are highlights in a season, they are not normal games.”
