7 Ways We Are Using Artificial Intelligence in Our Life Without Knowing It

There are examples of Artificial Intelligence that you and I are using in our daily lives, unconsciously. The ways artificial intelligence is working and crawling up our daily lives, it will not be long when we are totally dependent on it for even a glass of water.

Here are the 7 ways that artificial intelligence is impacting our daily lives and we are not even remotely aware of them!

1. Advertisements

In place of this hefty term, we will simply call it ‘target-based marketing’. Have you ever thought to yourself when you saw an ad on Facebook, Instagram, or other social media like ‘Damn! I was just checking this out on my Amazon.” This is called target-based marketing.

The technology behind this is called the use of cookies, that is common knowledge. But what powers cookies, the AdWords, the target audience, and web session tracking? That is artificial intelligence operating right there. The data is stored, processed, and then sorted as per the user’s preference.

2. Virtual Assistants

If you are using a smartphone (who doesn’t?) then you have already encountered artificial intelligence more times than you can count.

“Ok Google, find hotels near me.”

“Hey Siri, tell me my plans for tonight.”

What is Google Assistant, Siri, Cortana, and others? Are they some application that you can use to fool around in your phone when you have nothing better to do?

These virtual assistants are a part of your life when you ask Google Assistant to save a reminder, ask Alexa to play some song, or ask Siri to search for the latest movie tickets. They are all examples of artificial intelligence which makes these applications respond to your search queries and show results.

3. Facial Recognition

Samsung and Apple have been at each other’s throats for god knows how long. They are constantly working to improve and outsmart each other. Do you remember the first of its kind feature in Samsung Galaxy S8 which used Iris Scanner to unlock the phone? That’s artificial intelligence.

You can also find the same in your latest iPhone X as well which has a facial unlock only and can identify you through various looks. Bam, artificial intelligence once more.

4. Games

Have you played chess on your computer in your childhood? Who do you think played at the other end? Was it some employee at Microsoft who had free time and was remotely playing against you? No, that is artificial intelligence that we used.

That goes back quite a long time. If you recall, artificial intelligence started coming up 10-15 years ago. There are more games other than chess that we are playing in our smartphones that are all working on artificial intelligence.

5. Uber

Have you wondered how the application decides how much you will be charged for an Uber journey? No, there is not an Uber employee sitting there with a calculator and estimating the price of your journey by the time it still in the loading phase.

There are calculations happening but it is actually being done by the artificial intelligence and machine learning programs around which the entire application is built. The same happens with the drivers, the way they get their rides, and the way the ride request is sent out to the drivers.

6. Gmail

There is a folder called spam, primary, promotional and social in your Gmail account. How does Gmail know which email belongs in which section? There is no manual sorter from Google who is constantly watching your phone and is immediately sorting the email as soon as it arrives.

The spam filters are not just a bunch of keywords that have been identified and placed. The spammers are humans who are constantly getting smarter. So, we also need our spam filters to be updated. Here comes in the role of artificial intelligence which learns from the signals and personalises the Gmail experience.

7. Facebook

I know right? Facebook; of all places? But it does use artificial intelligence. If you have noticed it, whenever you upload a photo on Facebook, it immediately shows you the suggestions of the names of people who are present in the photograph. How can it identify instantly which friends of yours are there? That’s where they use artificial intelligence.

The database of your friends, the photos of your friends are checked for against by the artificial intelligence to identify who looks like whom and the suggestions are drawn up of the people who might be present in the photo.
