NOT for the first time, play at the Australian Open was paused momentarily for a crying baby during Rafa Nadal’s quarter-final with Marin Cilic. It sparked a debate on social media and among commentators about whether something needs to change.

During the last eight clash on Rod Laver Arena, play was halted during the third set with the world No 1 4-3 up in a third set tie-break.

Nadal waited to serve as the infant was soothed and the chair umpire felt comfortable for play to continue.

Jim Courier, commentating for Channel 7 weighed in saying: “This is where the player wants a chair umpire to ask for the baby to be removed.

“Neither of these guys want to play with that. What’s a baby doing awake at 10pm at night, anyway?”

Meanwhile, with Nadal heading home and all hopes of a Fedal 2.0 final gone, we await Roger Federer’s quarter-final with Tomas Berdych and South Korea’s new tennis hero Hyeon Chung vs. Tennys Sandgren.
