Now 40, Dawn – who first appeared on the soap in 1988 – has swapped her long dark tresses in favour of a shorter style and now spends her days working as a DJ and volunteering for a charity called Beanstalk, which helps children learn to read.
It could have been a different story back in 2002 however, as it’s claimed she was invited back to the Coronation Street set to re-audition for the role, though lost out to Kate.
Nevertheless, Dawn doesn’t appear to be at all bitter about the knock back and has appeared in a number of Coronation Street documentaries in which she details her time on the soap.
And she certainly had some memorable story lines before she was written out of the show in 1999, including her near fatal ecstasy overdose.
She also gripped viewers in 1995 when she displayed her resentment of her mother Deirdre during her marriage to husband Ken.
The character famously left for London in the late 90s, but returned in 1999 to marry carpet fitter Robert Preston – another relationship that ended in disaster.
Dawn last made headlines in 2013 when she boldly shaved her head for charity in memory of her late mother.
Speaking at the event, she admitted that she missed her time on the show but is enjoying her current career path.
Dawn confessed: “Obviously I do miss working on Corrie but I do find the work I do now very rewarding.
“The fact is, I believe everyone should have the chance to learn to read. I still do DJ-ing but I like volunteering for Beanstalk as I supported children to read about things they were interested in and for them to be able to get enjoyment from it.”
