X Factor winner Louisa Johnson on Ed Sheeran, Steps and long album delay (EXCLUSIVE)

The 19-year-old, who won The X Factor in 2015, is yet to release her first LP; marking a clear shift from predecessors who rush-released their own collections in the space of a few months.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, she explained: “It’s just how I wanted to do it. I thought if I did win, when I brought out an album, I didn’t want to follow the same pattern.

“I wanted to put out a few songs before the album, I just felt like that was the way for me.”

She’s definitely off to a good start: her Clean Bandit collaboration Tears was a bona-fide smash last summer, while So Good had so much staying power that it was in the iTunes Top 5 at Christmas – two whole months after its release.

That being said, it’s hard for acts nowadays to pull in big numbers straight off the bat – unless, of course, you’re Ed Sheeran. Is his ginormous success exciting for newcomers, or intimidating?

“I think it’s exciting,” Louisa maintained. “It can show what you can achieve if you work hard and keep going.

“It would be great to even get one place behind him. That means you’re doing something right! But it shows what you can achieve in the future.”

Louisa seems wise beyond her years, which is perhaps why it’s a startling reminder of her age when she’s asked about the recently-announced Steps reunion. “I’m probably a little bit too young,” she laughed politely.

Of Best Behaviour, that all-important new single, she revealed: “This song wasn’t even thought about until So Good was out. So I didn’t even hear of it until after So Good; it was a brand new thing that came about.

“But you know when you hear a song and you just know? The vibe was right, the concept of the song was really cool. It’s very flirty but very fun at the same time, I felt like it was the right direction to go to.”

Best Behaviour by Louisa Johnson is out now, and will be performed on Let’s Sing and Dance for Comic Relief this weekend.
