X Factor 2017: Former winner BLASTS controversial new format 'Really harsh'

The new style of the popular ITV talent competition now sees the contestant’s performances divided between Saturday and Sunday night’s shows, with the singer with the lowest votes of the night being sent home both days.

X Factor boss Simon Cowell, 58, has also axed the sing-off, instead having the two acts with the most public votes compete to win a prize.

After coming under fire from many fans when it made its debut last weekend, the format has now been criticised by last year’s winner Matt Terry, 24.

“I like some things and other things…” the pop star tailed off as he spoke about the show to press including Express.co.uk. “I’m grateful I’m not there for that.”

Although he admitted he’s jealous of the prizes that the acts get the opportunity to compete for this year, Matt said: “I think the bottom two going isn’t a very good idea.

“For me, that saved me,” he added, explaining that being in the bottom two and surviving encouraged his fans to vote for him after his semi-final scare.

“I think that’s crucial and I think that not being there is really harsh,” the X factor alum blasted. “That’s it, you don’t get your second chance.

“That was kind of a little lifeline that you get there, but that’s gone.”

He also confessed that he wasn’t convinced by the idea of the public and the acts knowing who received the most votes each week, saying: “I think it’s pretty scary because I think that’s going to potentially affect who’s going to leave.

“People love a dark horse,” he added. “So we’ll see. But the shows great.”

X Factor continues tonight at 8.20pm on ITV.
