Woman Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker CONFIRMED as Peter Capaldi's replacement

Jodie Whittaker will take on the role of the 13th Time Lord when the sci-fi series returns for a special episode at Christmas entitled “The Doctors”.

The actress was announced as the new Doctor this afternoon after Roger Federer won the Wimbledon Men’s Final against Marin Cilic.

She will be the first female Doctor in the show’s history with Olivia Colman and Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge previously rumoured to be taking on the role.

Many will recognise Jodie from her role as Beth Latimer in ITV’s Broadchurch, which was penned by new Doctor Who writer Chris Chibnall.

She was previously the fourth favourite to take over the key to the TARDIS, with odds of 25-1 just four days ago.

The actress previously denied that she would be involved in the new series of Doctor Who.

In a recent interview on YouTube the actress was asked outright if she would be taking over from Peter and refused to refute the claims.

As well as a starring role in Broadchurch, the 35-year-old also appeared in Wired, Black Mirror, Attack the Block and Marchlands.

It comes after  after he announced he was stepping down from the role earlier this year.

Many were convinced that the Death in Paradise star would be the new Time Lord after reports surfaced in April that he had already been cast.

And this afternoon, Twitter went into overdrive as they awaited the announcement.

One fan tweeted: “I honestly don’t think I could bring myself to watch Kris Marshall as Doctor Who that would be such a tragically uninspired choice.”

While another added: “I am quietly sure #DoctorWho13 will be Kris Marshall, which will disappoint me.”

Other popular choices to take on the role included Tom Rosenthal, David Harewood and James Norton.
