Winter Storm Toby: Over 4,000 US flights cancelled across the country

US flights have been badly disrupted by the recent snow storm to plague the country.

Winter Storm Toby is to strike the US tonight, with predictions of as much as 18 inches of snowfall on the northeast coast.

This is to affect Washington, New York and Philadelphia badly as the storm rolls in.

Flight tracker FlightAware has revealed over 4,800 flights are already cancelled, with 11,059 flights delayed as well.

American Airlines has been hit the hardest with 571 flights cancelled already, followed by Southwest with 509 flights and United with 507 flights

Those travelling to or from Newark face further travel misery with nearly 500 arrivals and departures cancelled.

La Guardia doesn’t fare much better, with similar numbers cancelled. The airline tweeted: “#LGA expects airlines to cancel all flights after Noon today due to the Nor’easter affecting the region.

“We urge customers to check with their airline to confirm their flight before traveling to LGA. Please contact your carrier for more details on rebooking cancelled flights.”

Airlines are allowing passengers to change their flights for free, waiving the charges to attempt travel later in the month up to March 25.

American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines are the latest to allow the charges to be rid of.

Passengers are urged to check their flights before heading to the airport to ensure they are still flying, as well as allow additional time to get to the airport if their flight is still going ahead.

It is the fourth storm in three weeks to have hit the East Coast, with previous storms having hit on March 2, 7 and 13.

Nine people were killed and over two million homes were left without power as a weather warning is issued for the storm.

The Nor’easter cyclone is bringing winds form over the Atlantic Ocean as a number of states declare an emergency.

What is Nor’easter? Accuweather defines it as a storm which forms along the northeastern part of the United States.

This is caused by warm Atlantic Ocean air colliding with arctic cold to the north and west.
