In CCTV footage uploaded to YouTube, the man can be seen watching the woman siting at the tram stop.
He then gets up and walks towards her before rushing forward and trying to grab her phone out of her hands.
The woman looks up in shock as she realises what the man is doing.
A struggle ensues, and the pair grapple with each other as both try and keep hold of the phone.
The pair move around the tram stop, before the would-be thief edges dangerously close to the road.
He successfully gets the phone from the woman, and turns to run quickly across the street.
But danger strikes, and the man runs out just as a tram is pulling in to the stop.
He is hit, and falls between the tram and the pavement, getting repeatedly bashed by the tram.
The clip has gone viral, with over 1.7million views.
Commenters revealed the incident happened in Bogotá, Colombia, and the man survived but suffered broken bones.
However, sympathy was short for the phone thief, with one person writing: “I’m totally ok with this”.
Another wrote: “Karma haha”.
The thief who got hit by a tram and suffered broken bones is not the only person to suffer swift justice.
