Virgin Atlantic announced a change to their economy fare travellers to lower prices.
Earlier this year, the airline announced “economy light” fares would mean that cabin bags would no longer be included.
Instead, it would be a hand luggage only ticket, like many airlines now offer, to offer “Virgin Atlantic’s lowest fare”.
Seat reservations will also not be included in the ticket price, but food and drink are still included.
What are the current rules for hand luggage and cabin bags with Virgin Atlantic?
Hand luggage
Virgin Atlantic travellers can all take a cabin suitcase onboard that is up to 56cm x 36cm x 23cm,
A personal bag is also allowed onboard, such as handbag or purse that is not deemed baggage.
The weight depends on the fare ticket; economy and premium travellers are allowed up to 10kg.
Upper Class passengers can have up to 12kg for one bag, or up to 16kg if adding a personal bag onboard as well.
The weight can be split between to make up the 16kg.
Checked luggage
The most basic fare, Economy Light, doesn’t include any checked in bags as part of the ticket and would need to be bought.
Up to seven bags can be bought per person, weighing up to 32kg and measuring 90cm x 75cm x 43cm.
The cost starts from £45 for one bag and increases up to £140 each for four or more bags.
Economy Classic and Economy Delight include one bag to be checked into the hold, up to 23kg and measuring 90cm x 75cm x 43cm.
Premium tickets are allowed an additional bag of the same size, whilst Upper Class are allowed three bags weighing up to 32kg.
The airline advises that if travelling with an alternative airline as part of the journey they “may also charge an extra baggage fee if your checked in bags exceed their limit”.
What is British Airways hand luggage allowance?
Passengers can take both a personal bag and a cabin bag onboard with them for free, no matter what ticket they buy.
They must both weigh under 23kg, whilst the suitcase must be no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.
easyJet allows passengers to travel with one bag only, be it a suitcase or a personal bag.
Unless purchasing a ticket higher than their basic fare, these two bags must be combined.
Ryanair now only allow Priority passengers to have their suitcases in the cabin for free, and other passengers have their bags taken into the hold for free.
