President Donald Trump promised to “stop cold the attacks on Judeo-Christian values” in the first address by a sitting president before the Value Voters Summit Friday.

Trump made several references to Christian scripture in his address to the crowd as he extolled the virtues of Americans’ prayerful and courageous response to the Mandalay Bay Massacre, pledged to stop attacks on Judeo-Christian values, and promised an end to the “war on Christmas.”

Trump said the current administration and its supporters are “returning moral clarity to our view of the world and the many grave challenges we face.” The president also said his administration was delivering on its promise to defend “our nation’s religious heritage.”

“We know that it’s the family and the church, not government officials, that know best how to create strong and loving communities — and above all else we know this: In America, we don’t worship government, we worship God,” Trump said.

Trump also praised the courage of the American citizens who protected one another during the Oct.1 mass shooting in Las Vegas. He extolled the compassion and unity they demonstrated in their sacrifice for one another, and the bravery of the law enforcement officers who responded to the crisis.

“America is a nation of believers and together we are strengthened and sustained by the power of prayer,” Trump said.

“Americans defied evil and hatred with courage and love. The men and women and who risked their lives to save their fellow citizens gave proof to the words of this scripture, ‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it,’” Trump added, referencing the Gospel of John.

Trump challenged the perceived war on Christmas that he said was motivated by political correctness, specifically lambasting the reticence of department stores to say “Merry Christmas,” despite decorating for the season and saying “Happy New Year.”

“Well, guess what, we’re saying Merry Christmas again,” Trump said.
