President Donald Trump responded Friday morning to claims that former FBI Director James Comey began drafting a statment recommending against charging then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in a probe on her use of a private email server.
“Wow, looks like James Comey exonerated Hillary Clinton long before the investigation was over…and so much more. A rigged system!” Trump tweeted.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Sen. Lindsey Graham released a statement on Wednesday saying Comey had “already decided he would issue a statement exonerating Secretary Clinton” before the FBI had interviewed her.
Grassley and Graham allege that Comey had circulated an early draft of a statement exonerating Clinton in April or early May before he made his decision public in July 5 after interviewing Clinton on July 2.
Throughout his campaign and presidency, Trump has repeatedly accused the FBI, media, and government of being part of a “rigged system.”
Robert Mueller, the special counsel who is leading the FBI’s investigation into Russian election interference, has reportedly expanded his probe to include determining whether or not Trump obsturcted justice by firing Comey in May.
