The third season of True Detective got off to an eerie start on HBO and Sky Atlantic with Mahershala Ali’s Detective Wayne Hays leading the cast. The case dominating the plot this season involved two missing children who were reported missing in episode one. Things are starting to heat up as the case is revealing itself to be a twisted and convoluted puzzle.
What will happen in True Detective season 3, episode 5?

The case of the missing Purcell children is set to continue in next week’s episode of True Detective.
While the body of the boy Will (played by Phoenix Elkin) was discovered at the end of episode one, his sister Julie (Lena McCarthy) was still missing.
Episode five in the season is titled If You Have Ghosts and will follow on from a slightly slower paced fourth instalment.
A synopsis for the next episode simply reads: “Law enforcement officers navigate a web of conspiracy to deal with a bizarre murder.”
The perspective of Detective Wayne Hays (Mahershala Ali) continues to be explored from the three different timelines.
A promo trailer released hints at more dramatic developments about to unfold.
The teaser opens with the 1990 Hays and Roland West (Stephen Dorff) driving through Arkansas.
“It’s something isn’t it,” West remarks: “How quickly this town died.”
Hays’ chilling response is: “It didn’t die, it got murdered.”
Next is a shot of Amelia (Carmen Ejogo) whose voiceover says: “The lost child is a void. That echoes backwards and forwards in time.”
This quote seems like an obvious reference to the show’s separate timelines.
Back to 2018 Hays, who is being interviewed by Elisa Montgomery (Sarah Gadon) as she says: “They’re all gone, vanished, killed, kept silent,” as shots of a burned out playground are shown.
Hays gives a suspicious look here suggesting he knows something sinister. The look is bolstered by 2018 West saying: “How you going to talk to these people? We done what we done.”
Elsewhere 90s Hays says: “We don’t stop, take it all the way this time.”
The Purcell parents meanwhile are still struggling to cope with their ordeal.
A montage of violent shots then plays as Elisa asks about the late Amelia: “Did any of her research suggest a larger conspiracy?”
A quote from Hays rounds out the trailer amid several shots of him, Amelia and West in various dodgy situations.
“The things I’ve seen, the things I know won’t do anything but cause harm.”
He finishes: “It’s the case – it’s only ever the case.”
True Detective season 3, episode 5 will air next Sunday on HBO and next Monday on Sky Atlantic
