Tim Robbins to Play an Angsty Philosophy Professor in New Alan Ball Drama for HBO

In July, HBO announced it was greenlighting a new drama from Six Feet Under/ True Blood creator Alan Ball. Per The HollywoodReporter, the show will star Oscar winner Tim Robbins, who recently appeared alongside Jack Black in HBO’s short-lived political satire The Brink.

Robbins will play Greg, a philosophy professor with some serious existential angst that threatens his relationship with his lawyer wife, played by Holly Hunter, whose casting was announced in November. The show — for now still untitled — is a drama centered on an eclectic, multi-racial family with one biological child and three adopted children from three different countries: Somalia, Vietnam, and Colombia.

For Ball, the ten-episode drama follows the Cinemax action series Banshee, which he created and which ended its four-season run in May. As for Robbins, the show marks his return to television after The Brink failed to gain traction with viewers or with HBO, which announced it would renew the show during its first season but then reversed course and cancelled it. The details so far are scarce, but hey, if someone wants to create a family drama that isn’t This Is Us, I’m on board.
