The X-Files is back: Mulder and Scully reunite as show returns for 10-part series

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles of FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully following last year’s successful reboot of the show.

Chris Carter, who created the much-loved show, will also return as executive producer, with filming expected to start in the summer.

President of Fox broadcasting, David Madden, said of the eagerly anticipated return: “Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows.

“And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide.

“Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files,” David added.

The X-Files follows paranormal investigators Mulder and Scully as they look into unexplained events and UFOs.

The original series ran between 1993 and 2002 and led to two successful feature films.

The show returned last year for a six-episode run and became the highest rating drama to be shown on Channel 5 at the time.

The first episode of the last series drew a massive 5.1 million viewers, giving Channel 5 a record-breaking 19% share of the television audience.

Fox also reported that The X-Files enjoyed similar success in the US, with the show gaining an average of 16 million viewers.

The latest news follows an announcement earlier this month that Duchovny and Anderson would reprise their investigating roles for an upcoming audiobook, titled The X-Files: Cold Cases.
