Rick’s mortality in The Walking Dead has always been been a huge source of speculation, with the zombie epic’s future being shrouded with uncertainty without its leading protagonist.
Kirkman has insisted The Walking Dead can live on without the Alexandrian leader and his latest issue of the comic book seems to tease fans that they’re just about to find out if he was right.
During the previous issue of Kirkman’s hit literary series, Rick terrified readers by confessing to his wife Andrea, who was perishing on her death bed, that he doesn’t feel like he can go on living in a post-apocalyptic world without her.
Now the ominous cover of issue #170 has fuelled fears of Rick’s death further as Michonne, Eugene, Siddiq, and Magna are seen escaping Alexandria.
The foursome appear armed and ready for war with Negan, but Rick’s absence could spell danger for the former sheriff, though Carl and several other members of Alexandria are also out of shot.
Filming of The Walking Dead season eight is now well underway and showrunner Scott Gimple also warned that Rick could be killed off in the looming chapter ahead.

He told TV Line: “[Rick] will suffer any loss, even his own self to give his people and other people the life that they should live, where the world belongs to all of them and not just one person. A real life.
“That’s the only choice. So he’s willing to face the losses.”
The Walking Dead is expected to return to AMC and FOX UK later this year.
